Princeton Beats Out 13 Schools to Win Facebook’s College Hackathon

Overcoming stiff competition from MIT and Waterloo, Princeton won this
year’s Facebook College Hackathon finals. Over the past few months,
Facebook conducted run-off competitions at fourteen colleges across the
United States and Canada, and this Friday held the finals at Facebook
headquarters in Palo Alto. The Princeton team was the only one comprised
mainly of women, and their winning project Color Me Bold allowed users
to submit a photo of an outfit and receive instant, algorithmic fashion
suggestions for how to improve its color scheme. Watch as we interview
some of the top teams, play around on Facebook’s famous Ripstick
skateboards, and talk with the winners about whether they’ll be turning
their project into a startup.

My personal favorite was MIT’s 2toBrowse, a Chrome extension that
allowed two people on separate computers to both control active cursors
and collaboratively browse the web. One users installs the extension,
receives a special URL, and another can click it to instantly begin
browsing together without having to download anything. The extension
could help people teach their parents how to use a specific website,
allow customer service departments to walk customers through solutions
to problems, or provide entertainment.

Other high quality projects included Georgia Tech’s Skoole, an on-campus
peer-to-peer SMS-based textbook exchange, and a cloud-hosted security
system from the University of Illinois team that lets users access their
personal browser settings and files from public computers using the
proximity of their mobile phone as the key. Waterloo produced the most
technical project, a JavaScript MapReduce distributed computing library.

The College Hackathon, also known as the Camp Hackathon, serves as a
powerful recruiting tool for Facebook. By finding top young engineers
and bringing them to the headquarters, Facebook increases the chance
they’ll want to work for the company once they graduate — or drop-out
like Facebook’s founders. Though I must say, the $500 per team member
grand prize seems a bit small considering the company is preparing for a
$100 billion IPO. At least last year’s winners got a summer internship
at Facebook.

Facebook is the world’s largest social network, with over 500 million
users. Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg in February 2004,
initially as an exclusive network for Harvard students. It was a huge
hit: in 2 weeks, half of the schools in the Boston area began demanding
a Facebook network. Zuckerberg immediately recruited his friends Dustin
Moskovitz and Chris Hughes to help build Facebook, and within four

Alcohol-free whisky is halal-certified


We’ve seen the creation of halal baby food and halal cosmetics over the years, both free of ingredients that are forbidden by Islamic law. Given that alcohol is also one of those forbidden ingredients, it makes sense that there’s now ArKay, a brand-new halal-certified whisky beverage that’s entirely alcohol-free.

Gearing up for a global launch this week, Florida-based ArKay bills itself as “the world’s first alcohol-free, whisky-flavored drink.” The beverage includes no alcohol and so is technically considered a soft drink; at the same time, it’s said to taste just like the “real thing,” its maker asserts. Not only that, but the product conforms to halal guidelines and is made with certified halal ingredients. From December, ArKay will be available in one-liter glass bottles and 12-oz. aluminum cans for USD 10 and USD 4, respectively.

With a potential market that amounts to roughly a quarter of the world’s population, ArKay is now seeking qualified distributors and importers around the globe. Retailers far and wide: time to get in line?

Platform connects artists and entrepreneurs with charities for joint fundraising


Over the years we’ve featured numerous crowd-funding initiatives, and back in January we discovered 33needs which focuses entirely on social enterprises. In a similar ethical vein, US-based HelpersUnite is a social platform that enables entrepreneurs, charitable causes and events to raise funds and awareness, by linking them together on one site.

Entrepreneurs and creative initiatives can post their project proposals for free to HelpersUnite. Once the proposal has been approved, they can add a pitch, photos and videos, which will be displayed on the site for 120 days for the public to fund. All projects must select a charity that will benefit from their funding, but can choose the percentage that they donate. Social media integration, personal connections and a network of helpers can be utilized to drum up support. Charitable causes can also create a profile, which enables them to accept general donations, and connect with the HelpersUnite community and project creators looking for a cause to support.

The HelpersUnite events platform, meanwhile, helps people hosting events that may be too large to sell tickets off-line, but too small for “big-ticket” venues. Event creators must also select a cause to support, and will then have access to the HelpersUnite community to promote the event. Anyone can help fund projects, causes or attend events, and users can search the site by category, locality, how close a project is to being funded, and how recently a project has been added. HelpersUnite will receive nine percent of project and cause funding, and seven percent of ticket sales.

Smartphone technology used for portable ultrasound imaging device


According to US company Mobisante, more than 70 percent of the world’s population are without access to ultrasound devices, usually because they are too expensive and not portable enough. However, with the recently launched MobiUS — a smartphone-based ultrasound imaging system — they hope to offer a convenient and affordable solution.

The MobiUS device and abdominal probe are designed to allow medical professionals to take ultrasound images and videos wherever they are, and share information with remote providers via a mobile or wifi network. Measuring 5.1” by 2.75” the device can fit into a pocket, however a version compatible with Windows-based tablets is also in development with a bigger screen and higher image resolution. Users select what type of patient examination is taking place — for example cardiac or vascular — before starting the scan. Ultrasound images can then be adjusted in contrast and intensity, and the software can also calculate measurements and add text. A camera on the phone, meanwhile, can capture external images and video which can be shared via email or saved to a PC. Mobisante believe the device and probe — costing USD 7,495 — will facilitate quicker diagnosis, and will be ideal for disaster relief teams and mobile medical professionals. It should be noted that the MobiUS device cannot be used to make and receive calls or text messages, nor can the probe be used on other smartphone devices. However, there’s plenty of inspiration here for entrepreneurs hoping to make other medical tests more accessible using smartphone technology.


In India, Facebook used to find blood donors in emergencies


Hospitals around the world depend on blood donors for the treatment of patients in emergency situations, as well as for the treatment of patients with ongoing conditions. Some blood types, however, are less common than others, making it harder to find matches. Now in India, Socialblood is taking advantage of Facebook to connect people of the same blood group, facilitating blood donations in emergency situations.

Socialblood was launched this summer by 22-year-old founder Karthik Naralasetty who won the Staples/Ashoka Youth Social Entrepreneur competition. The Facebook app invites users to register simply by selecting their blood group. They are then connected to one of eight Facebook groups — one for each blood type. They can invite friends to join the campaign via Facebook, post a message in case of an emergency or respond to requests for blood donations. Already Socialblood has seen participation from 1,500 people, and Naralasetty says a recent post from a man asking for blood for his daughter received 74 responses in 24 hours.

Robotic polar bear pillow helps stop snoring


The science of sleep has inspired many of the innovations featured on Springwise, with a recent example being the Somnus Sleep Shirt featured earlier this year. Now we’ve discovered Jukusui-Kun in Japan, a polar bear-shaped robotic pillow designed to measure and respond to blood oxygen levels and sound levels, in order to help people who snore.

Jukusui-Kun — meaning “deep sleep” — is thought to be the world’s first anti-snoring robot, consisting of a pillow and a hand sensor, both in the shape of polar bears. It was developed by Dr.Kabe and a team of researchers at Tokyo’s Waseda University and demonstrated at last month’s International Robot Exhibition in Tokyo. Snoring is thought to be a sign of sleep apnea, a condition linked with blood oxygen saturation, causing the sleeper to stop breathing momentarily. According to a Gizmag report, the smaller polar bear sensor attaches to the sleeper’s hand to monitor oxygen levels in the blood, while a microphone in the pillow records noise levels. Both “bears” are wirelessly connected to a terminal, which analyzes the data they gather. When oxygen levels decrease and noise levels increase simultaneously, the large polar bear pillow is triggered to move it’s paw gently across the sleeper’s face, causing them to turn over without waking up.
